Best timetable: a very good example of “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, Lufthansa’s iconic yellow timetable is easier to use and faster than any website. Best first-class dish: I find it’s rather difficult to beat a glass of Krug and a plate of the Japanese carrier ANA’s signature chicken curry. Best hotel breakfast: Masuichi Kyakuden, a former sake brewery, with rooms designed by John Morford, boasts the best breakfast I’ve sampled in my travels. It’s a smart mix of all the classics with a little Nippon twist. Best reinvention: the Claska, a luxury Tokyo boutique hotel, got a better restaurant, rooms and gift shop out of the deal.
